Premiums and Freemiums - Whos Doing What? by Shira Linden
Just like in the fashion industry, premiums have their hot sellers and their has-beens. The industry is sensitive to changes in technology that render some premiums obsolete, and to political events that affect the business climate. Stan Konik, President of Konik and Company, a merchandise premium supplier to the publishing industry for over 30 years, reports that cameras, which used to be very popular, are now defunct, thanks to digital photography. Calculators and many electronics have also gone by the wayside, he added. Some premiums simply go out of vogue. Pens, for example, are now dead. Umbrellas are only used on a limited basis, because the quality is not there at the price point marketers want to pay - between $2.00 and $2.50 per item and decreasing. People are looking for lower priced items with high perceived value, Konik declares. He reports that many want imprinting, so his firm offers customized products as well as drop-shipping. September 11 turned the premium industry on its head. All business ceased, said Konik. He noted that now business is back to pre-9/11 levels, but the nature of the business has changed. Scissors and knives were popular before 9/11, but have practically disappeared, save for one magazine catering to hunters. Conversely, security devices, such as radios with attached flashlights and sirens are good movers. Current top sellers include jumbo display clocks with time, temperature and date, travel alarm clocks with temperature, date and alarm, binoculars, mini radios and scan radios, databanks (mini PDAs that incorporate calculators), pedometers, especially for health newsletters, and tools like the motorized power driver screwdriver. Stainless steel travel mugs and tote bags are also doing well. Konik likes to see clients feature the premium on the envelope, on a 4-color buckslip and in the letter. He claims that when the premium is predominantly featured, marketers will see a 28% lift in response versus a non-premium mailing.
Premiums Can Send Results South Overall, the majority of marketers who weighed in looked favorably upon freemiums and premiums. The exception was VNU. Neil Eisenberg, Circulation Director of VNU Business Publications, stated that American Artist previously used pamphlet-sized books with repackaged editorial content, such as 101 Tips for Painters, as well as canvas duffle bags. When they removed the premiums about three years ago, response went up. I cant say why - I dont know if it was just luck or the premiums didnt inspire our prospects to reply, Eisenberg stated.
Premiums, Freemiums = Business as Usual On the other hand, several publications use premiums routinely. For over a decade, Highlights for Children has been using premiums and freemiums in their packages to consumers as well as teachers. Were famous for our freemiums, said Bill Hummel, Senior Vice President of Marketing. We use them as door openers. We get lots of brand identity with those. They definitely lift response and have a high perceived value. We create our own - theyre unique and distinctive, and tie into the publication. Weve used them for so long its pretty much a given with us. Most, although not all Highlights packages also have premiums. Their gift sub offer includes a free Hidden Pictures Calendar with each subscription ordered, a premium that refreshes itself, which makes it attractive. Highlights also mails a teacher package, which includes a choice of items teachers can use in the classroom, such as reward stickers.
Premiums Out, Freemiums In For the past year, freemiums have substituted for premiums at Kiplingers. The freemium enclosed in their statement of benefits package, 12 Grade-A Ways to Build a Nest Egg for Retirement, is an attractive, 4-color laminated insert. Subsequently, Kiplingers dropped the lamination, and went to a lesser paper weight with an aqueous coating and results still held up. Carol LePere, Circulation Director and Associate Publisher, indicated they tested the freemium along with a new package. The whole package worked like gangbusters. The freemium doesnt cost much, yet provides a value-added benefit subscribers have come to expect. Recently, they redesigned the freemium for their upcoming mailing to keep it fresh. LePere reports that retirement is the most popular personal finance topic, followed by taxes. The market changes too quickly for stock tips. Previously, Kiplingers relied on editorial premiums with their renewal promotions. They also tied editorial premiums into a soft offer.
Combination Offer Were not a big premium user, said Ken Godshall, Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing at Hearst Communications, Inc. We like to sell the magazine on its merits at a reasonable price. But when Hearst tried a combination sale in the Quality School Plan setting, It boosted response so much it got our attention. We wanted to appeal to a younger female consumer, so the offer was buy Seventeen and get a six month subscription to Cosmo Girl. It turned out to be one of the biggest successes in publishing last year. A postcard mailer enticed prospective Cosmo subscribers with a bonus 6-issue sub to Marie Claire. Goodshall indicated the combination sale is quite new - just one to two years old. He called it, smart marketing, indicating theyve had some success in renewals as well, which makes the response even more attractive. But every marketing coup has its down side. We cant do it all the time. The limitation is that we cant make this offer continuously, just a few times per year, he said.
Winners Rely on Premiums According to Hallie Mummert, writing in Target Marketing, Blockbuster Direct Mail - Secrets of the decades most successful controls, April 2005, The biggest predictor of success between long-term controls and those that burn out within two years can be boiled down to one word: gifts. Grand Control winners (257 Axel Andersson winners whose mailings were tracked over the last decade) offered premiums or freemiums in their efforts nearly 400 percent more than their general mail counterparts. Specifically, 44.7 percent of the Grand Controls used such incentives as name and address labels, special reports, tote bags, plush animals, flower bulbs, stickers, calendars and calculators to drive response. Or do they? Yet, according to the CircTrack 2004 study of paid consumer magazine circulation, premium usage in direct mail control offers has dropped from 41% in 2000 to 26% in 2003, the last year that figures were available. When consumers were queried in the CircTrack 2004 consumer survey, 58% of consumer magazine subscribers prefer price discounts, 21% favor an extended term subscription and only 14% prefer gifts. Of those who have renewed a magazine subscription in the past 12 months, 64.3% were motivated by a price discount, 20.6% by extended term, 7.4% by gifts and 6% by the editorial product itself.
The CircTrack findings are upheld by ParadyszMatera, a leading list brokerage and consulting firm serving the magazine publishing industry. Glenn Lalich, Vice President, reports premium use was down across the consumer magazine marketplace, dropping from 51% in 2003 to 47% in 2004, although not all types of incentives saw declines. The most common incentive, premium upon payment, held steady at 36% of consumer magazine promotions in 2003 and 2004. Freemiums stayed at 7% for both years. As expected given the growth of hard bill-me offers tied to voucher packages, incentives designed to increase upfront response (premium on order) declined from 9% in 2003 to only 6% in 2004. Lalich reports use of editorial versus merchandise premiums has seen little movement in recent years, adding that on the merchandise front, one of the more popular items of the past year or so has been the personal organizer from mailers like Time, U.S. News & World Report and even Details. Conde Nast also offers a variety of interesting fashion bags/handbags for titles like Glamour, Lucky and Vogue.

Sleep apnea is the brief cessation of breathing during sleep.Currently the treatment for this condition is for the sufferer to wear a machine at night that forces air into the system. As a reflexologist, I periodically see clients who can not tolerate wearing a contraption on their face that treats them for sleep apnea. Many are desperate for a another solution to help them sleep better and perhaps even overcome their dangerous condition. The good news is that a combination of homeopathic suppliments and reflexology might help them sleep better.
The Mayo Clinic has clearly laid out signs of sleep apnea,including morning headaches, loud snoring and episodes of breathing cessation during the night. Some apnea sufferers have reported dreams of swimming underwater and trying to get to the surface, being smothered, or other such dreams where they wake up gasping for breath. Morning headaches can be a sign that not enough oxygen is getting to the brain, which could lead to memory problems. For the person who can not adjust well to the standard sleep machine treatment, finding alternatives can be frustrating. An internet search for homeopathic cures for sleep apnea produces such results as pillow makers with items to elevate heads in a certain position. Another website encouraged sufferers to stregthen certain airway muscles by taking up the didgeridoo. In short, the list of other solutions is quite limited for people who do not tolerate sleeping with the standard sleep machine.
Reflexology is a hands on technique in which pressure points are massaged to promote healing in the body. Each point corresponds with certain areas of the body, many of which are located on the feet and were mapped in the early 1900s by researcher Eunice Ingham. While anectodal evidence has shown reflexology has helped many people with a variety of problems, academic research in the United States is sparse. Since each client is unique, reflexology is difficutl to measure. While some people respond immediately and dramatically to a treatment, other people find the benefits more subtle. Because of this, it is difficult to measure the influence of a reflexology session. Reflexologists are not the only ones who have faced this problem in the world of wellness. It was only some thirty years ago that chiropractors were considered quacks by established doctors. And today the true benefits of massage is still not documented, acupuncture is often looked upon with suspicion, and energy healing is only now emerging on the radar map of serious therapies.
The area underneath the feet that corresponds with the diaphram controls general circulation and sleep. That is not to say that with proper stimulation, all sleep issues can be fixed. Instead, reflexologists can often tell if their clients are sleeping well at night by pain in this area. This reflex point was so sore on one of my clients, that for years he would jerk his foot away and beg me not to rub that point on his foot. He suffered from periodic, brief cessation of breathing at night and had not sought treatment because he didnt realize he had severe sleep apnea . In early 2009, the clients wife asked him to take a new product, Stem Enhance and Stem Flow by Stem Tech. Within three weeks the pressure point on his foot had lessened in sensitivity, thereby allowing me to work the spot extensively. Within days his sleep apnea had disappeared, and to date has not returned. Due to considerations other than his sleep apnea, the client discontinued Stem Enhance and Stem Flow after the fourth month, and to date has not resumed this suppliment. The point on his foot remains only slightly sensitive, but not so badly that I can not rub it. His sleep apnea has not returned. Several weeks ago another client showed a problem in the same area on the foot. I concentrated a little extra time on the diaphram and heart spot. Upon questioning him, the man admitted that he woke up with headaches, but he had never told his doctor about his sleeping problems. When he returned a week later, he recalled that those headaches had lessened considerably, and we are watching it to see if this may be able to help his sleep issues. A minimum of three treatments, with special emphasis on the diaphram pressure point in the foot, would be extremely beneficial to give the body a chance to combat sleep issues. Having worked on both men., its obvious that the nutrisuppliments helped the reflexology be more successful than without. It would be interesting to see what other nutrisuppliments can produce such beneficial responses as well.
The promising results with these two clients opens an exciting future for sleep apnea sufferers. My experience in reflexology has taught me that stimulating reflex points do not always produce the cure for sleep apnea that clients need. In this case, the client using the Stem Enhance and Stem Flo had such a quick and impressive reaction to this course of treatment that I decided to carry it in my practice. Further study is needed, but the carryover of this product might extend to heart disease and other circulatory issues. The future of homeopathy and circulatory issues looks very bright, especially for the treatment of sleep apnea.

Its hard to believe that this is my nineteenth Hub about the women of Indian cinema. Its been a long journey since the first one. This time we have the standard actresses and models, but we also have two Femina Miss India winners, and one Miss Universe. And these stars come from Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali language films, plus at least one American film.And some of these stars belong to families that span generations of Indian actors and actresses.And we have one Bollywood actress that you can follow on Twitter.So here they are with pictures, short bios, their upcoming films and a few have links where you can see their films online.For free of course.
Indian actress Sushmita Sen was born on November 19th, 1975 Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Not only is she a popular actress, but she was the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe competition (in 1994). When Sushmita was eighteen, she won the Femina Miss India pageant (beating The Most Beautiful Woman in The World, Aishwarya Rai). She proceeded to represent India at the 1994 Miss Universe Pageant in Manila, Philippines and won. Using the fame from winning Miss Universe, she entered acting, and made her film debut in the 1996 film, Dastak.Sushmita went on to appear in over thirty films, and has been nominated for, and won many awards. She is set to appear in No Problem and Dulha Mil Gaya in 2010.
South Indian actress Swapna was active in the early 1980s and mid 1990s, acting in Tamil, Telugu and Bollywood films. Swapna got married and left the film industry and is now working with her husband in their project management company, developing festivals, events and conferences abroad. She made around thirty films, her last being Janam Se Pehle in 1994.
I have mentioned Indian film actress Tabu in many of my Hubs, and what amazes me about her is her ability to go from very plain looking, to wildly exotic with little effort. Tabu was born on November 4th, 1970 in Hyderabad, India.Although she mainly acts in Bollywood films, she has also appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and one American film.Her aunt ls art house star Shabana Azmi, and she is the sister of Bollywood actress, Farah Naaz.She made her acting debut at the age of fifteen in the 1985 film Hum Naujawan. Tabu has gone on to appear in over seventy films. She has three fims, Toh Baat Pakki, Seasons Greetings and The Legend Of Kunal set for 2010 release. Her Hollywood film was Namesake (2006). The film got good reviews, and was on several critics top ten lists for 2007.
Tanisha Mukherjee was born on January 1st,1978 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. She is part of the famous Mukherjee-Samarth family, and that makes her related to Rattan Bai (great-grandmother), Sashadhar Mukherjee (her grandfather),Shobhna Samarth (grandmother), Joy Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee (uncles), Shomu Mukherjee (father), Tanuja (mother), Kajol (sister), Ajay Devgan (brother-in-law), and her cousin is Rani Mukherjee.And really, she is related to more stars, but I cant list them all here.Yes, the family is THAT big. She started out as Baby Tanuja in the 1950 film Hamari Beti with her older sister Nutan. Tanuja went on to appear in well over one hundred films and is still acting.
