From Boreray and the Stacs, MV Cuma motored towards Hirta and Soay, which are the two largest islands in the St Kilda archipelago. The next two by size are Boreray and Dun. The cliffs falling from the summit of Connachair (at 430m, the high point on Hirta) are the highest sea cliffs in the British Isles.

As Cuma made her way round the east side of Hirta, we caught sight of the jagged outline of

Monsieur Notebooks

A few weeks ago I was sent these attractive leather-bound books from Hide Stationery, a recently-established English company that sells them under the Monsieur brand. These notebooks are hand-bound in India, by craftsmen paid fair wages, and have a definite "hand-made" artisanal feel about them; you can see from the occasional loose fibre on the edges of the leather that they have been cut by hand. These are not high-end leather goods as you might see in Smythson's, but a practical alternative for the rest of us. (That said, I really must replace my Game Book before the start of the grouse season as my current one is nearly full. ;-)) The leather is very rigid on the small black notebook, but has more "give" on the larger, A5 book. Monsieur state that the leather used in the binding is vegetable-tanned, and it shows in the patterns you see in the leather. As this is a natural material you will notice slight blemishes, marks and wrinkles which I think is part of the charm. See below for a close-up of the finish on the A5 brown leather notebook.

The books are stiff when new, and take a little bit of effort to open. They are perfect-bound, and don't lay flat when opened. Over time, I should think it will be easier to make it lie flat, as the leather in the spine is broken in. They have that leathery aroma, as another reminder of this book's cover material.

The black notebook is around A6 size, 145mm high by 110mm. It has 192 6mm ruled pages of 90gsm ivory paper. I have no information to hand as to the origin of the paper used, but hopefully this is also obtained from sustainable sources. Taking my fountain pens and a few pencils out, I tested the paper to see how well it handles fountain pen ink and graphite.

As you can see, the paper can handle my inks fairly well. There's a bit of feathering on the Diamine Imperial Blue from my M90, perhaps some also with the Kelly Green, but that is all. My M90 is a wet writer anyway, which is why I use it to test paper in these reviews. When you turn the page, you do notice some bleedthrough, though it's not excessive by any means.

This is a classic "little black book" for writing down your innermost thoughts, or perhaps just notes from a boring business meeting. With this cover, it should last for years in your handbag or briefcase. I like this little notebook a lot, but for me the winner in this pair is the larger, brown leather bound A5 notebook. This one also has 192 pages, this time of plain paper of the same off-white stock as the black notebook. As I don't draw very well, I did not test the paper on this book, but I imagine it behaves as well as the paper in its smaller cousin. This is the proper size for a leather-bound notebook, I think. It's big enough for sketches, for which the plain paper helps. It's not far removed from the kind of notebook you would imagine Charles Darwin scribbling in as he wandered around the Galapagos islands.

Both notebooks have the regulation Moleskine-style elastic closure and bookmark ribbon, though they lack the Mole's inside-pocket. Good; Monsieur seem to have decided to keep things simple, and the pocket introduces more complexity to the design. The name and address plate on the inside is there however, printed in the art nouveau style. It's also styled in French as it says simply, "Nom, etc."

Both notebooks also have an embossed Monsieur logo on the back cover, complete with moustache and monocle. To my eye also harks back to the belle epoque, and makes for a nice finishing touch:

I think these notebooks are excellent, and should become more interesting over time as the material ages; by the time you've filled it up with your jottings, it'll look like the diary in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Some people may find them a bit rough-and-ready, but I like that quality, and they fill a niche for hand-made leather notebooks which would otherwise be satisfied by more expensive products. The A6 retails for up to GBP9.99 and the A5 for up to GBP12.99.

They are available at a few stationers' in the UK, and online at Papernation.

My thanks to Tom at Hide Stationery for the review samples.

Guardian Pencil Discussion

Pencil fandom becoming mainstream? The Guardian has a discussion about contemporary pencil usage.

Personally I don't consider myself to be a "commodity fetishist" when it comes to pencils, but I enjoyed this article and the comments beneath. I'll be commenting later, when I get back from an engagement I have this evening....

Cult Pens gets a few mentions in the article and the comments, as does Dave's Mechanical Pencils. Nice to see pencils get a discussion.

It would be great if some of the pencil bloggers could contribute to the comments, too.

CARQUEST VT Gov. Cup at Thunder Road Postponed

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                               TR-062311-35

Lonnie Sommerville: PASS North Series Autodrome Chaudiere Race Preview

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 6.22.11

For more information, visit www.MulkernRacing.com or email TbarrettGWC@hotmail.com

THE STORY

Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, New Brunswick, joins the PASS North Series for its debut at Autodrome Chaudiere in Vallee Jonction, Que., with the Habitations Dany Lagace 150 on Saturday, June 25. Sommerville hopes to rebound from a tough effort last time out at Speedway 660, when a mechanical failure took him out of contention shortly after leading the 200-lap event. He has never raced at Autodrome Chaudiere, though he and the Mulkern Racing No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders Chevrolet team did get the opportunity to test at the track earlier this month. Sommerville enters the weekend third in the PASS North standings, just 26 points off the lead through three races.

CURRENT POINTS POSITION: 3rd

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Despite the fact that the race this weekend is being held in Canada, Lonnie Sommerville is still a six and a half hour drive from Vallee Jonction, Que. – meaning he's closer to Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine than to Autodrome Chaudiere.
  • Mulkern Racing has never competed at Autodrome Chaudiere.
  • Lonnie Sommerville is one of only three drivers in the entire PASS North Series with two Top-5 finishes this season.
  • Mulkern Racing will take the same car to Autodrome Chaudiere that it took to Star Speedway and finished fourth with earlier this season.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

LONNIE SOMMERVILLE, Driver of the No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders/Community Pharmacies Chevrolet, On his impressions of Autodrome Chaudiere: “It was a nice little place. The surface is very smooth, with a lot of banking. Reminded me of a White Mountain (Motorsports Park) kind of deal. It's short, a little bullring. My guess is there's probably going to be some tearing of some fenders off the cars.

We were in the low 12-second lap range (during testing), so with 25 cars out there all going in the low 12-seconds, it's not going to be that easy to pass there. We didn't have anything to compare to for what the times were, but we know that the ACT (Late Model Tour) cars were around 12.9 (seconds). We're assuming we were pretty good and the car felt good. I'm thinking we've got something we can unload there with and be pretty good with.”

On rebounding from a 12th-place run at Speedway 660: “I kind of expect, in talking to Joey Doiron and testing there, I expect it to be the type of deal where if you've got third place car and you're thinking about whether to take that risk and go for second, you might want to just take third. You've got to be very careful now not to finish outside of Top-5. That's going to be tough to do, but you can't expect other guys to finish outside the Top-20. We've got to go there trying to win the race here, but we've also got to go and try and get the most points we can and not take any chances.

The key is to unload with a race car that's going to be fast right off the trailer. (Points leader Johnny Clark's) team has been the best at that the last few years, and I think we've done that this year everywhere we've been. When you have the resources and top people that some of these teams have, when you go to a track it's almost always similar to other places and you work from that.”

On what it will take to get the team a win: “A little luck. Realistically, we contended and could have won the first few races. We didn't. But if we go this weekend and we all do our jobs and work together as a team – and I do my job as a driver – I don't see any reason why we can't win. I'm sure 25 other guys all say the same thing, so its not that easy. But we're on the verge of winning some races, and hopefully once it starts, we'll get on a roll.”

UP NEXT

The PASS North Series races next weekend at Canaan Fair Speedway in Canaan, N.H., with the Firecracker 150 on Saturday, July 2... Though it will mark Lonnie Sommerville's debut at the track, Mulkern Racing won the event a year ago with driver Ben Rowe, leading more than half the laps in the process.

WINCHESTER, Indiana (June 22, 2011) - - ARCA Racing Series (ARS) presented by Menards Rookie of the Year contender Maryeve Dufault returns to short track racing this weekend in hopes of repelling of a strong finish gone a-wall from Michigan in Saturday night’s Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts.

The driver of the No. 12 VR-12 / Dodge Motorsports Dodge Charger returns to a half-mile oval looking to take the checkered flag after gallant efforts at Salem (Ind.) Speedway and Toledo Speedway were ruined with DNFs (did not finish).

Armed with a stellar Dodge Charger built by the Mooresville, North Carolina-based Tony Marks Racing (TMR) team, Dufault and her posse look to make some noise in just her third career short track start.

“I’m extremely optimistic about this weekend,” said Dufault who enters the ninth race of the season 11th in the championship standings. “The more I’m competing at short tracks, the more my learning curve strengthens. My main objective this weekend is to get comfortable during practice, start as close to the front as we can and complete all 200 laps. If we can do that, we should have a relatively good finish.”

Saturday night’s anticipated brawl officially marks the halfway point to the 2011 ARCA Racing Series season. Dufault and her TMR have experienced their share of ups and downs, but the Sorel, Quebec native feels that her team will begin an uphill swing of finishes marching forward.

“We have eight races under our belt,” Dufault explained. “We’ve learned a lot in those races that should help us tremendously moving forward to the rest of the year. I’m incredibly grateful to VR-12 and Dodge for their continued support of our race team. I’m just hoping we can close out the year with some more strong finishes.”

The finishes that the former NASCAR Canadian Tire Series pilot is referring to dates back to earlier this month at Chicagoland Speedway where Dufault carried her team to their first career top-10 finish with a solid 10th place finish at the 1.5-mile oval. While short track racing offers different situations and odds under racing conditions, Dufault knows that her chances of finishing in the top-10 are still obtainable.

“Finishing in the top-10 is no easy task in the ARCA Racing Series this season,” Dufault sounded. “The competition is strong on a weekly basis which forces the other team to step up to the plate and try harder. I feel we would have a couple more top-10 finishes this year if we didn’t have some bad luck. That’s just part of the game though. We’ll go to Winchester this weekend and prepare to beat the odds.”

Tony Marks, owner of TMR offered his insight on Saturday’s night contest. “Despite the bad luck that we’ve had on the short tracks, Maryeve has been competitive, just been at the wrong place, wrong time. We’ve laid out our goals for the race and we’ll do everything we can to accomplish them.”

The Winchester ARCA 200 presented by Federated Auto Parts (200 laps / 100 miles) is the ninth of 19 events on the 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The 22nd ARCA race at Winchester is a one-day show. Practice begins Saturday, June 25 with a one hour and half practice session planned from 1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. Menards Pole by Ansell qualifying is slated to begin later in the day at 4:45 p.m. The field will take the green flag later that night shortly after 8:00 p.m. The race will not be televised but event coverage including live timing and scoring throughout the 1,321st race for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards since it was formed in 1953 will be available through the ARCA Racing Network (ARN) online at arcaracing.com presented by ARCANation.com.  All times are local.

TMR has been at the forefront of charitable giving through its’  “Driving Against Hunger” and “Million Meal Challenge” race programs which have raised over $200,000 for Forgotten Harvest in 2010 at the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events at Michigan International Speedway.

For the NASCAR events TMR along with TMT, Inc. partnered with Forgotten Harvest for the “Million Meal Challenge For Our Kids” which helps to bridge the hunger gap while schools are out of session and feeds 20,000 children per day in the Detroit metro area. Forgotten Harvest was significantly displayed on the entry of Chase Austin during both the Truck and Nationwide events at Michigan International Speedway along with logos of “Million Meal Challenge” sponsors Walgreen’s, United Race Group, Holyfield’s Choice Alka-Power Water and Vitamin Spice.  Evander Holyfield was also instrumental in the challenge, acting as Grand Marshall for the August race and announcing his “Fight Against Hunger” on behalf of Forgotten Harvest.

As the first race team to “Drive Against Hunger” through their partnership with Forgotten Harvest, TMR plans to continue their alliance with Forgotten Harvest and once again “Drive Against Hunger” during the 2011 season.
