Where have all the round pencils gone?

I mean good quality pencils, not the cheap ones you buy as souvenirs. I recently found out about stenographers' pencils such as the Staedtler 101 and the Faber-Castell 9008, which of course do not appear to be available here in the UK. I've seen them advertised on Amazon.de and ebay.de but my German isn't good enough to make enquiries about postage costs to the UK, a pity really because the Staedtler Stenofix looks like a very smart pencil indeed, and I don't mind the fact it's available only in HB.

It seems obvious to me that a circular, rather than hexagonal shape, is more comfortable for long spells of writing, whether it's another chapter of a novel or just some notes taken in a meeting. Yet, none of the top brands appears to offer them any more, or if they do, they sell them only to select places. One has to go cheap to find round pencils, a situation set to continue as the Stenofix and 9008 appear destined for the dustbin of history if anecdotal evidence is to be believed, even when Staedtler still advertises the model on its global website.

Obviously, in an office environment where most people write their own correspondence on PCs, stenographers are an endangered species and the steno pencil also looks set for extinction. Another possible reason for the near-disappearance of steno pencils is the wastage of wood used in production. It seems that for a given slat, nine hexagonal pencils can be cut against eight round pencils. Clearly manufacturers have to pass on this cost to the customer, making a quality round pencil more expensive than its hexagonal competitor. I have some trouble believing this as it would then follow that all cheap, no-name pencils, or souvenir pencils, would be hexagonal too when clearly they are not.

For the "name" manufactuers, operating in a market where the humble pencil is considered a disposable commodity, it would be difficult to charge a premium to recover the extra material costs. For most users, there is no apparent advantage to using a round pencil over other shapes and the manufacturers have no stake in changing that attitude. It is possible now that most pencils are hexagonal because people expect them to be.

Many webmasters (you may be one of them) have probably considered using video on their web site for promotional purposes. Video is an excellent way to command attention from your viewing audience. However, the two largest concerns with video are file size and bandwidth. File Size Video is the largest of all currently deployed files on the web due to the fact it has audio and moving video. If you plan to host video on your own web site, it is important to know how much free space is available for your web hosting account due to the fact you can run out of space very quickly with video. A general rule of thumb is that a medium-quality video will consume one megabyte per one minute of video. For example, a five-minute video would be 5MB in size on average. Bandwidth Because video has a very large file size, it also consumes a lot of bandwidth. Every time someone downloads or streams a video from your web site, an excessive amount of bandwidth is used. Again, you should check your web hosting account to see how much bandwidth you have available. For example, lets say you have a web hosting account that allows five gigabytes (5GB) of data transfer per month. You have one five-minute video available for download on your web site that is 5MB in size. Without anyone downloading anything else, your video could be downloaded 1,000 times. However, in combination with your web pages and images, that number will decrease significantly. Also, if you have additional videos for download, the number is even less. Alternatives to Hosting Video on Your Web Site If hosting your own video consumes too much space and bandwidth, an alternative is to use a video hosting service. There are both free and paid hosting services available. Free services are YouTube and Google Video. For pay services, do a web search for video hosting and plenty of options will present themselves. The advantage to paid hosting is that you can host files yourself without any branding that does not belong to you on your video. For free services, branding does exist which may drive traffic away from your web site.

Jeffrey Archer's Pen

A while back I posted a question on the Fountain Pen Network regarding J G B*ll@rd's pen (I wish to mask the spelling of this author's name because some of his fans scan the internet for anything related to him and that particular post attracted some scorn from certain people). I had heard on the radio that B@ll*rd used a Parker fountain pen. Nobody seems to know what model of pen, or much less, care. Of course, it doesn't matter what type of pen he used, nor does it matter what type of paintbrush Picasso used or the make of John Coltrane's saxophone. I was curious; and I'll probably never know.

For the sake of informing readers of this blog, B*ll*rd wrote all his first drafts longhand, probably with a Parker fountain pen of uncertain provenance, in blue ink. Second and subsquent drafts were written on an typewriter, and could be heavily edited with handwritten notes in blue or red ink, and pencil. Interestingly, the typewritten drafts were single-spaced, judging by this example, the first page of his novel Crash. This page is, to me, a work of art, a precious artefact which I am delighted now resides in the British Library.

All of this points to the meticulous care with which he assembled his novels, whose stature will rise long after his death, aged 78, in April 2009. It is interesting to note that, deep into the computer age, this master of speculative fiction never deviated from this pattern of working. He was proof that it was still possible to take the most basic of tools - a pen and paper - and create entire worlds.

Which leads me on to Jeffrey Archer. I've read only one of his books, many years ago, and I'll never get that time back now. However I recall a newspaper advert for Parker pens from the early 1980s where he is quoted as saying he buys a new Parker fountain pen to write each novel. Now I would love this to be the case; Nobel laureate John Steinbeck famously used pencils but it would be apposite that Jeffrey Archer uses a Parker fountain pen, and not just any old pen but a super-deluxe model with 24-karat everything.

Imagine my disappointment when, on Googling this, I discovered that Archer now claims to write with Paper Mate felt-tip pens, not a pen resembling a fragment snapped off a floating gin-palace. This is a bitter blow because it breaks my pet theory that there is an inverse relationship between a writer's pen and the quality of their work. In fact I find my theory completely refuted, unless I resort to the line that Archer is the exception which proves the rule.

Meh.

Blackwing 602

Until last week I'd never even heard of the Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602 and to be frank, I don't know what the fuss is about as I've never used one - obviously. Anyway a lot of people are getting excited over the California Republic re-issue of this "legendary" (sic) pencil.

It certainly looks smart, though the flattened ferrule and eraser take a bit of getting used-to. All of the California Republic pencils I've seen online look the business though and if I could get my hands on some I'd be interested to try them out.

  • Production ANCA Centre Chiniara/SN
  • Challenge 4 ANCA Meilleur Ramoneur.

RPM Speedway -

Pro All Stars Series news - PASS South North Wilkesboro preview

PASS Labor Day Classic at North Wilkesboro to Celebrate Short Track Racing

CHARLOTTE, NC (August 20) – Ever since Pro All Stars Series (PASS) officials announced their intentions to bring racing back to the Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway earlier this year it has created quite a buzz in the racing world.  After all, the upcoming Labor Day Classic to be held September 3-4 will mark the return of racing to North Wilkesboro after a 14 year hiatus.  And, if that was not enough, PASS President Tom Mayberry shocked the short track racing community when he announced that the 63-year-old facility will host a 300 lap Super Late Model event paying at least $75, 000 to the winner April 7-9, 2011.

“It’s a great honor for everyone associated with PASS, from the teams to the officials to the fans, to join Speedway Associates in bringing true short track action back to North Wilkesboro,” said Mayberry.  “North Wilkesboro Speedway presents many unique challenges to our competitors and we think the fans that attend our races this year and in 2011 will see some of the most unbelievable racing they’ve ever witnessed.”

In addition PASS officials recently announced that the Limited Late Models, Stadium Stocks/Four Cylinders, and Allison Legacy will also join the PASS South Super Late Models September 3-4 to celebrate the return of short track racing to North Wilkesboro Speedway.

“When you look back at the origins of stock car racing, you don’t have to look any further than Wilkes County and the cat-and-mouse game that went on between bootleggers and revenuers,” said Mayberry.  “Short track racing came from those roots and we couldn’t be more pleased to have the Limited Late Models, Stadium Stocks, and Allison Legacy cars join PASS in reviving short track racing at North Wilkesboro.  You can’t have short track racing without those blue collar racers who do it purely because they love it and we’re glad to have them as part of the Labor Day Classic.”

Veteran driver Brandon Ward and his New Day Motorsports team have tested extensively at North Wilkesboro in recent months to prepare for the Labor Day Classic.  Ward was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the track, especially considering how long it had sat dormant.

“The racetrack is in relatively good shape.  I was surprised how good the surface was for as long as it’s been sitting idle,” said Ward, driver of the #62 Yarbrough Transfer/Miller Welders Chevrolet.  “The track doesn’t have a lot of grip, but it didn’t have grip the last time there was a race there in 1996.  The driver that wins is going to have to save tires and have something left late in the run.”

And, with both team and driver hailing from just down the road in Winston-Salem, NC, the Labor Day Classic has been a race Ward and his teammates have had on their radar all year long.

“It’s huge to win a race in PASS South because the competition is the absolute toughest you will find in the Southeast,” said Ward.  “It would be huge to win at a track that is just coming back.  Also, it’s relatively close to home and we’ll have a lot of friends and family there so it would be great for New Day Motorsports to get a win at North Wilkesboro.”

Another driver who has tested at the legendary race track is 20-year-old Texas native Trey Mitchell.  In his first full season racing in PASS South, Mitchell has scored four top ten finishes and sits eighth in points.  And, he would love nothing more than to put his name in the record books alongside the notable list of winners at North Wilkesboro Speedway.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to be the next winner at North Wilkesboro since Jeff Gordon was the guy who won the last race there,” said Mitchell, driver of the #47 Mangum’s Oilfield Service/SponsorTrey.com Ford.  “It’s going to be all about tire management.  The place fits my driving style and I think it’s pretty sweet because it still looks a lot like it did when they ran the last race there.”

The Labor Day Classic weekend will kickoff on Friday, September 3rd with gates opening at 11 AM.  There will be a rotating practice for the PASS South Super Late Models, Allison Legacy, Limited Late Models, and Stadium Stocks beginning at 2 PM.  Practice will run until 7 PM and gates will close at 8 PM.  On Saturday, gates will open at 7 AM with rotating practice from 9:30 AM to 11:25 AM.   Qualifying will begin at 11:30 AM for the Allison Legacy cars, Limited Late Models, and PASS South Super Late Models.  The Stadium Stocks will draw for their feature starting positions if there are less than 36 cars and will run heat races if there are more than 36 cars in attendance.  Racing will begin at 2 PM with a 25 lap main event for the Stadium Stocks, to be followed by the last chance race for the PASS South Super Late Models, a 35 lap event for the Allison Legacy cars, and a 50 lap event for the Limited Late Models.  The PASS South Super Late Models will compete in the final event of the weekend racing for 200 laps in the Inaugural Labor Day Classic.  The complete weekend schedule can be found at ProAllStarsSeries.com.

The PASS South Super Late Models will utilize the Labor Day Classic as a tune-up for next year’s North Wilkesboro 300, which will pay $75,000 to the winner.  PASS eligible drivers could take home $100,000 if they are the first to reach the checkered flag.  The North Wilkesboro 300 promises to be one of the biggest events in Super Late Model history and will take place April 7-9, 2011.

Staedtler Pencil Manufacturing

This is Staedtler's promotional video, which gives more detail about the composition of the lead than the How It's Made film.

This one concentrates more on the preparation of the slats and the finishing process than Staedtler's.

No Diets For MeI will not promote diets per say on my site. As Ive indicated quite clearly in my various descriptions about Plus Size Lingerie, women are beautiful just as they are whether skinny, curvy, or anything in between!Diets Dont WorkOk, ok, so some work temporarily but then what happens? You get into a slump and it all goes to pot. Many diets are so artificial and imbalanced that you cant continue on them for long and can be a real hazard to your health. I have personally tried all kinds of diets from grapefruit, cabbage soup, high protein, and even the kind I would recommend (ie the balanced, everyday food you can get from the grocery store and eat that way for life kind). What happens in the end? Just what I mentioned, everything is great and then something happens, a relationship breakup, someone close dies, my friend moves away, I have to get a root c. Sometimes it can just be a string of small things and the old patterns get irresistibly triggered. Thats when I put away the tight plus size leather and pull out the stretchy BBW baby dolls. So What Does WorkIve come to the conclusion, that instead of beating ourselves up for being curvier than perhaps wed like, we will do better to learn how to simply love ourselves and treat our bodies with love and care. Instead of counting calories, agonizing over choices, feeling deprived or frustrated, we start making wiser choices and adding them naturally into our everyday lives. There may be times when you could choose that great chocolate caramel cheese cake or an apple. Well that may be the day you have a small piece of chocolate caramel cheese cake and enjoy every bite. Just dont do it every day. Start replacing plain white bread with multigrain bread. Add colors to your diet with fruit and vegetables - lots of bright colors mean antioxidants and other great nutritional benefits. Start moving your body more - walk, get on a stationary bike, swim or take yoga or swimercise. Take the pressure off yourself - make wise choices slowly and let them become a habit. In the meantime keep loving yourself just as you are.Life Goes OnLife doesnt stop while we go on some diet to change what we dont like about ourselves. Our bodies do exactly what they are designed to do. Too many calories and too little exercise - they store fat for a time of need. Certain diet choices too many times ie sugar, fats, additives etc and the immune system starts to react - usually with inflammations leading to arthritis, heart disease, diabetes etc. The problem, I feel, is deeper than dieting can help. The solution is within each one of us. Its learning to know and love ourselves, to break out of old and useless patterns and actually start living as the amazing beings we all are. In the meantime, slip into some sexy plus size lingerie and thank your amazing body for all it does for you.How To Love Ourselves - more about this subject next time

Here goes with another Blogspot blog which nobody will read.

I've had a lifelong fascination with stationery but particularly with pens and pencils. I have long used a fountain pen for taking notes at work and at home, but recently I re-discovered the joys of using a pencil. I have been trying a few out of late: various Staedtler pencils, including the Noris, tradition and Lumograph ranges; and a couple of Tombow Mono 100s. I am interested in various writers' working habits. Japanese pens and pencils also interest me greatly.

It was about three years ago that I became actively interested in pens. After years of using a keyboard and mouse my handwriting had suffered and as I abhor ballpoint pens, I bought a fountain pen as I had used one for writing in my professional examinations because I tend to press too hard into the paper when I use a biro. Like many who have been educated at university, I have a callous on the middle finger on my writing hand from writing so many essays and exams with a Bic Cristal.

Let me be clear: I am not a collector of anything, but like many people I have a collection of pens and pencils acquired over the years.

My main pen is a Pilot M90. This is the best pen I have ever used. I also own various other Pilots, and a couple of Lamy Safaris. Here in the UK, Parker is synonymous with fountain pens, but I've never really liked them much even though I used one at school (or perhaps, because I used one at school). I do use blue Parker Quink, having spent a lot of money on other brands. More on that some other time.

As for pencils, I have one true mechanical pencil, a Pentel P205 which I bought in 1994 for a course. I have a couple of clutch pencils: a Staedtler Mars 788 which had a blunt lead when I found it, and a Woerther Shorty which I use for sketching but which is also useful for other tasks like shopping lists. Recently I have gone back to buying and using woodcased pencils, and I adore Staedtler pencils. The most commonly-available Staedtler range in the UK is probably the tradition which can be purchased in most stationers'. Noris pencils are often found in supermarkets. Lumographs appear to be rare as hens' teeth though, and I had to buy mine online and not in a brick-and-mortar shop.

That is it for now, I think. Apologies for the appalling pun in the title; I daresay I'll regret it eventually.

One of the cutest parts of any wedding is the flower girl. Their sweetness, enthusiasm, and unpredictable nature make flower girls absolutely charming. When it comes to flower girls, the more the merrier!Flower girls should be between the ages of about two and nine years old. Their role in the wedding, besides being adorable, is to precede the bride up the aisle. Traditionally, we think of flower girls as scattering rose petals in front of the brides path. The idea was that the brides life would be happy and filled with flowers. However, if your ceremony is indoors, the church or venue may not permit petals or confetti to be dropped on the floor, so be sure to check in advance. There are some other very lovely alternatives to scattered petals. The flower girl could carry a beautifully decorated white basket, either filled with rose petals (to carry, not toss), or flowers. For a slightly older flower girl, you could give her a floral pomander to carry down the aisle. Pomanders are flower covered round balls hanging from pretty ribbons. They also look very romantic suspended from trees at a outdoor wedding.Another nice option for a flower girl is to give her a miniature replica of your bouquet. This is what I did at my wedding, and it was very easy for the flower girl to manage, even though she was only two and a half years old. A little bouquet can also be a fun idea for an older flower girl, who may feel honored to carry something similar to the s in the wedding. In some families, there are quite a few young relations that the bride and groom would like to include in the wedding. If that is true for you, by all means, invite them all to be flower girls. A very sweet idea is to have each flower girl carry a single long-stemmed flower (such as a rose) down the aisle. When the bride arrives at the altar, each little girls hands her a flower, which the bride holds as an arm bouquet. It is a very touching part of the ceremony. The children in a wedding usually take their jobs very seriously. Besides the bride, the flower girl is often the most excited participant in the wedding. Show the little ones in your wedding how much you appreciate their enthusiasm by including them in as many of the pre-wedding festivities as possible. Flower girls love to attend bridal showers, bridesmaids luncheons, and rehearsal dinners. Treat them to special flower girl gifts. Wonderful flower girl gifts include silver lockets, tiny pearl necklaces, and charm bracelets. As part of the present, you could also give her one of the great books that are written about flower girls. This would be especially nice for a shy little girl who is nervous about what to expect at the wedding.Little girls are very romantic. They love to get all dolled up in a twirly party dress and wear a wreath of flowers. If you choose to have a flower girl at your wedding, not only will she be a charming part of your day, but you will be giving her a very special memory. When she grows up, your flower girl may even decide to have a wedding just like yours.

When you get to a certain age it slowly starts to dawn on us ladies that over the years weÃve probably accumulated more clothes in our wardrobe (not to mention the spare bedroomÃs wardrobes, every chests of drawers in the house, all the bedside tables, the attics, under the bed, kitchen drawers and even in the garage) than we could possibly wear in a year.  And yet we never have anything to wear! If that sounds like you then follow these few basic guidelines and not only will you suddenly have tons of space in your home for important things like the grandchildrenÃs letters and pictures, but you will also have a streamlined capsule wardrobe and always something nice to wear.Firstly Ã" be ruthless.  Sort through your clothes and throw everything that you havenÃt worn in the last year in to the charity shop pile. If all the four seasons have passed and you havenÃt worn something then it is extremely unlikely you are going to wear it ever again.  DonÃt hold on to anything thatÃs too small in the (vain!) hope that you will slim in to it one day.  Next, sort out the remaining clothes in to different colours.  How many colours do you have?  Most people over forty should stick to a basic palette consisting of a few colours that they know suit them.  If thereÃs a little top or blouse standing out on its own because itÃs lime green, or custard yellow then are you really sure the colourÃs you?  If not, then bung it in the charity pile!Anything thatÃs torn or a bit dirty then put into a rubbish pile, as however nice you look in something there is nothing worse than stains or bursting seams.  Now you have the start of your ideal capsule wardrobe.  The next step is to check that you have the 10 or so essential clothes items that every woman, no matter what her age, should have.  These are the clothes it is worth spending a little more on Ã" spend wisely and they will form the basis of your outfit every day, whatever the occasion.  These include well fitting underwear, a versatile silk scarf or pashmina and beautifully cut separates that you can mix and match.  Ensure you have a tailored jacket or blazer that you can dress up or down and invest in a cashmere or wool coat in a classic colour and cut as it will go with everything and last you years and years. If you donÃt already, next sort out your wardrobe in to winter and summer clothes.  NowÃs the perfect time to pack away all your summer skirts and linen dresses.  Take a little time to fold them properly, place tissue paper in between, and remember to pop in a little sachet of lavender, and youÃll be rewarded next year with a summer wardrobe thatÃs ready to go as soon as the sun comes out. Finally colour code your clothes.  Some people advise hanging skirts and jackets and so on together but I would recommend that you put similar colours together.  Not only will this look much nicer it suddenly becomes so easy to find things.  If you havenÃt the space to hang everything, put similar tops and jumpers together in to clear boxes so you can see what is inside or label them on the outside. All this will only take a couple of hours or so and itÃs well worth the effort.  You may never say you have nothing to wear ever again!
