Late rally lands Foley Airborne win

Three in a row for Sportsman Robin Wood

Airborne Speedway June 4 Recap

South Plattsburgh, NY – George Foley of Saranac Lake started 14th in a 30-car field of Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTcar Modifieds and wound up in the winner’s circle after passing upset-minded Cameron Grady with two laps to go Saturday at Airborne Speedway. Foley’s win came after Chuck Hossfeld won the Della Auto Group 100 in the Race of Champions Asphalt Modifieds’ inaugural Airborne appearance.

Grady, the polesitter, was looking for his first career win in the Andy Kane Automotive No. 27. He led the first 27 laps through two restarts and finished fourth. Pat McGrail of Candiac, QC, who ran in the top five all night, was the runner-up. Patrick Dupree advanced steadily by running strong, top or bottom, to claim third. Daniel Brown of Sutton, QC was fifth. Positions 6-10 went to Kris Vernold, Andy Heywood, Craig Reyell, Martin Roy and Don Scarborough.

The win was Foley’s first of the season and seventh of his career. It was the first Ford-powered win in a DIRTcar Modified at Airborne.

“I developed a push halfway through and I wasn’t too sure about racing on the outside to catch the 27 (Grady), but it worked out,” Foley said in victory lane. “It’s been a while since I’ve been here.”

Foley passed Brown on the high side for third on lap 19. One lap later, Dupree went three-wide to overtake Craig Reyell and Andy Heywood for 6th. The second restart came on lap 22 after a multi-car collision turn three involving Terry Hayes, Bryant Trim, Leon Gonyo, Jim Ryan and Adam Bartemy. When the green came out, Dupree went by Vernold for fifth and began to pressure Brown.

A late yellow set up Robin Wood’s third straight J&s Steel Sportsman win on Saratoga Auto Body/Furniture World Night.  Wood worked his way by Bucko Branham, who led most of the way. Travis Bruno of Plattsburgh edged Branham in a photo finish for second. Nick Heywood of Plattsburgh was fourth.

Wood and Branham are now tied on the all-time winner’s list (24) and promoter Mike Perrotte has put a $250 bounty up for whoever can break his current winning streak.

Erick Sayles of Saranac Lake held off hard-charging Chris Lavair of Gabriels to earn his first Mini Modified win. Josh LaVarnway placed third.

Josh Durivage came from the rear of the field to win his third straight Busch Bomber event. Curt Lagrave Jr. led much of the way and finished second.

Robbie Favreau of Peru scored his first ever Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade win. Defending champion Kevin Boutin wa second, followed by Big Daddy Don Franklin, Joe Warren and Josh Terry.

Airborne PR : Dupree going for 3rd Airborne title

For immediate release                                                  AS-041911-1

South Plattsburgh, NY – Until proven otherwise, defending Ernie’s Discount Tools DIRTcar Modified champion Patrick Dupree of Saranac Lake is the man to beat at Airborne Speedway. Airborne begins its 58th stock car racing season with the Della Auto Group Fast 50 Saturday, May 7.

Dupree won the 2010 season opener and was the point leader the rest of the way, winning five more races to claim his second Airborne track championship. His car of choice was the older of two machines prepared by his stepfather and car owner Wes Moody.

“The car’s been done over more than once, but it’s basically a six-year-old TEO chassis,” Dupree said. “I bent it pretty good at Syracuse when I hit a rut and then the car in front of me on a restart. That pinned the wheel and I went straight across into the wall, but I think it’s ready to go now.”

Airborne has mandated an MSD ignition box that will limit motors to 7600 rpm in 2011. It’s a rule welcomed by Dupree and Moody even as some observers thought their dominance brought the rule about.

“It will take some horsepower out, but it won’t slow the cars enough to notice,” Moody said. “Our motors are built by Andy Costello. They were never super-high revvers anyway. This will keep the motors alive and keep everybody racing. I think that’s the main idea. The faster cars are the ones that really handle and Patrick’s pretty smooth, so I don’t think we have to be concerned about the new rule. More teams are improving, the competition’s getting tougher, that’s the challenge of it.”

“The main goal is to get off to a good start like we did last year,” Dupree said. “I’ve said before that winning races is the goal, but I have to admit it’s pretty nice to come to track and see your name on top of the point standings. You kind of want it all, but being consistent is what gets you championships.”

Even as the Saranac Country Store/Fournier’s Farm Equipment No. 24 gets prepped for another title run, Moody’s at work on a new car. “It’s going to be built with Syracuse and possibly some racing at Oswego and Loudon in mind,” he said.

All five weekly divisions will be in action Saturday, May 7 at the Della Auto Group season opener. Post time is 5 p.m. For further information, visit airborneparkspeedway.com.

Airborne promoter speaks at national convention

Airborne promoter addresses Speedweek National Workshop

For immediate release – AS-021711-1

Daytona, FL – Airborne promoter Mike Perrotte was a guest speaker at the RPM National Promoters Workshop in Daytona Wednesday. He was introduced as the director of one of the East’s standout short-track success stories (Airborne Speedway) and asked to describe his successes, failures, and near-misses as a relatively new promoter.

Perrotte emphasized that while promoters need to be aware of the circumstances of their specific market, having capable and friendly staff, running the races quickly and having a clean facility, have been the most important factors in Airborne’s success.

“Our headline DIRTcar Modified division is growing despite the tough economy,” Perrotte said. “They deliver speed and excitement and have built on an open-wheel racing tradition in our region.”

“Treat people with respect,” Perrotte said. “Treat them the way you’d want to be treated yourself. That’s important to fans, racers, sponsors, everyone.”

Randy and Debbie Queensland, promoters of Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, MN, were named 2010 Promoters of the Year.

Airborne Speedway Press Release

Airborne boosts Sportsman “4-20’s” purse and point fund

For immediate release – AS-012511

South Plattsburgh, NY – Airborne Speedway has announced that J&S Steel of Plattsburgh has renewed its sponsorship of the Sportsman division for the 2011 stock car racing season.

J&S Steel, Vermont Life Safety and Airborne Marketing Manager Sherm Hamel have arranged to double last year’s payout for the Sportsman headliner “4-20’s” event and create a $1,000 point fund lottery.

The Vermont Life Safety 4-20’s race, set for August 13, consists of four 20-lap sprints, each now increased to pay $500 for 1st place. The line-up for successive legs of the race is set by inverting the previous order of finish. The overall event winner, determined by the lowest total of combined finishes, also earns $500.

“The Sportsmen are a pretty competitive division,” Hamel said, “but if someone can win every segment, they can go home with $2,500.”

J&S Steel will provide a year-end bonus to the division’s point fund. “We’ll have a drawing among the top ten drivers and the winner will walk away with a $1,000,” owner Jeff Sears pledged. “All of us at J&S Steel are looking forward to the 2011 racing season at Airborne Speedway. I think 2010 was the best year ever at the speedway. The whole Airborne staff really goes out of their way to bring quality family entertainment to the Plattsburgh area. We are very proud to represent the Sportsman division and add some extra incentive for the racers.”

Bucko Branham of Plattsburgh was the overall  “4-20’s” winner in 2010, edging out track champion Robin Wood and rookie Bill Thwaits, who dropped out with electrical failure on the last lap.

The Champlain Valley Motorsports Show at Plattsburgh’s Crete Civic Center is scheduled for Friday and Saturday April 14, 15. Airborne’s 59th season begins Saturday May 7.

ACT - Patrick Laperle Steals Fall Foliage Win

Patrick Laperle Steals Fall Foliage Win

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                 ACT – 091210

Plattsburgh, NY – St-Denis, Quebec’s Patrick Laperle earned his second consecutive ACT Late Model Tour win and second consecutive Mohawk Casino Fall Foliage 300 at Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY. Laperle led early in the event after starting on the outside pole but faded during the mid-portion of the event and went down a lap after spinning on lap 161. After pitting for tires Laperle raced his way back onto the lead lap on lap 211.

Current point leader Brian Hoar and Joey “Pole” Polewarczyk, Jr., spent much of the race running side by side, swapping the lead, much like last weekend’s Bond Auto Labor Day Classic. Eric Williams joined the mix late in the event. Laperle made a three wide pass for the lead under Hoar and Williams after the final restart on lap 285.

Hoar’s second place finish was enough to clinch his seventh ACT Late Model Tour Championship. Pole took third, Brad Leighton fourth and Williams rounded out the top five. Rand Potter, Scott Payea, Brent Dragon, Craig Bushey and Joey Becker completed the top ten.

The event saw seven different leaders swap the lead an official 16 times. Leighton, Pole, Donald Theetge, Payea, Hoar, Williams and Laperle all spent time at the front. The race was completed in 2 hours and 15 minutes with 10 cautions. Nine of the 35 starters completed all 300 laps.

The American Canadian Tour will be back in action next Saturday, September 18 for the second annual ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Thirty-five of the 43 invitations have been handed out with the eight remaining drivers to be announced tomorrow (Monday, September 13). The 60 lap Invitational will join the Whelen Modified Series and the Camping World Truck Series for a tripleheader event next Saturday.
