Austin Theriault: ACT Late Model Tour

THE STORY

Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, looks to bounce back as the ACT Late Model Tour competes in The Big Jab 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Sunday, May 15. Theriault failed to qualify for the Tour's most recent event at Thunder Road International Speedbowl earlier this month after finishing an impressive seventh in his RPM Motorsports debut at Lee USA Speedway. Theriault made his ACT debut as a 15-year-old at Oxford in October of 2009, and last season he led 29 laps in this very event.

THE FACTS

WHO: Austin Theriault, Fort Kent, Maine

TEAM: RPM Motorsports No. 57 Varney Insurance Ford

LAST RACE: May 1, Merchants Bank 150, Thunder Road International Speedbowl, Barre, Vt. (DNQ)

NEXT RACE: May 22, Spring Green 111, Devil's Bowl Speedway, West Haven, Vt. (.500-mile oval)

CURRENT POINTS POSITION: 8th

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Austin Theriault sits eighth in the overall ACT Late Model Tour standings – the highest position for any driver who has not qualified for all events this season and higher than two drivers who have qualified for all the races.
  • Austin Theriault started sixth in The Big Jab 150 in 2010 and led a total of 29 laps in the first half of the race.
  • Austin Theriault is attending flight school near his home, in the town of Frenchville, Maine.
  • RPM Motorsports has won seven of the last eight ACT championships.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

AUSTIN THERIAULT, Driver of the No. 57 Varney Insurance Ford, On his up and down start to the season: “We had a good showing at Lee, and that topped my expectations there with a new car and new team clicking together. Thunder Road, that was a disappointment for everyone. I'm sure (team owner Rick Paya) was disappointed.

But like we've talked about, when you're new at things and you're not a seasoned veteran, you're going to have curveballs come along. We had one a little earlier in the season than I wold have liked, but that kind of thing only makes us stronger. It only makes me want to drive harder. It's a bad thing (not qualifying), no question, but it only makes you want to do better.”

On getting back to Oxford Plains Speedway, where he has a comfort level: “Oxford is a breath of fresh air. It's a circle and you're always turning there, but it is much more forgivng than a place like Thunder Road. There's a lot more room on the race track. There's multiple grooves to race in. We're looking forward to kind of redeeming ourselves there.

It defintely feels good to go back to a track where there's no question marks. We're still learning every week, the whole team is still learing, but it is an opportunity to shine again. Thunder Road is a driver's track, but if things don't go our way, it's going to be a tough day there. Oxford is more forgiving.”

RICK PAYA, RPM Motorsports team owner, On racing at Oxford Plains Speedway: “It's a hard track to get a handle on as far as handling goes. It's really a driver's track. It's a unique track. Our setup for that race track is totally different than anywhere we go, anywhere on the circuilt. It's taken me a few years to really figure it out. Local guys have a big edge over us Tour guys that only race there a couple of times a year. It's the kind of place where you see that the weekly cars really have it figured out.

It stays pretty consistent for our setup. What we have in the spring is what we show up for the '250' with. It seems to stay consistent for us. I've heard some guys say that it changes for them, but we haven't really found that. It's usually the same for us as far as what we bring for a setup everytime we go.”

UP NEXT

The ACT Late Model Tour heads to the Spring Green 111 at Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., on Sunday, May 22. This marks the first time the event will be held at the half-mile facility... Brian Hoar, who is the RPM Motorsports teammate of Austin Theriault, was the 1999 Spring Green champion. Theriault has never competed at the track.

"With our goal of being part of stock car racing action in Quebec, we are pleased to have secured a direct partnership with the 2011 Procam Super Truck Challenge. This series has a strong fan base in all Québec regions and is showcased on three important grassroots race tracks," explained François Dumontier, President of Octane Management and delegated promoter of the NAPA Auto Parts 200, presented by Dodge. "This is another fine way to get close to Québec stock car fans while supporting home grown racers."

Created in 1997 by Mr. Rhéal Carpentier, the Procam Super Truck Challenge, powered by the NAPA Auto Parts 200 presented by Dodge (the official name of the series for 2011), is entering its 15th season of competition. The series draws drivers from all corners of Québec, from La Pocatière to Rawdon, Hemmingford and Rigaud, to Mascouche. It also attracts a strong delegation of competitors from the Quebec City region and the Montréal area. The field is made up of drivers of all ages including veterans such as Martin Goulet Sr., and a seventeen-year old named Alexandre Jeannotte. "This season, our Procam Super Truck Challenge program is geared towards the young drivers. We want to make this a series that will launch their careers into the higher echelons of stock-car racing," says Jean-François Fredette, the series spokesperson. "However, these up and coming drivers will face plenty of opposition with the return of several series' veterans. In fact, our races could very well mirror the recent editions of the NAPA Auto Parts 200 presented by Dodge. Right now, we are working to make sure that at every race, the best drivers from the Montréal area face the Québec City region competitors."

Brent Dragon: ACT Late Model Tour

Oxford Plains Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

Brent Dragon of Milton, Vt., looks to gain ground on the ACT Late Model Tour championship leaders when the series runs The Big Jab 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Sunday, May 15. The all-time ACT leader in starts has been plagued by power steering issues through the first two events of the season, but the veteran driver has forged ahead to sit seventh in the overall standings. This will mark the third straight event in which Dragon will compete for Avery Motorsports.

NEXT RACE: May 22, Spring Green 111, Devil's Bowl Speedway, West Haven, Vt. (.500-mile oval)

CURRENT POINTS POSITION: 7th

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Brent Dragon has more starts than any driver in the history of the ACT Late Model Tour with 188.
  • Brent Dragon is one of only nine drivers to have qualified for both ACT events in 2011, and he's yet to finish worse than 15th in either of them.
  • Avery Motorsports won three straight ACT Late Model Tour events in 2006 with driver Ben Rowe.
  • Last season, Brent Dragon finished in the Top-10 in both ACT races at Oxford and also finished fourth in the TD Bank 250.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

BRENT DRAGON, Driver of the No. 55 Beverage Mart/Furniture World of VT/Charlesbois Freightliner, On putting power steering issues behind them for this week: “Those things just happen. (The team) got home (after the race at Thunder Road) and Monday shipped everything out to the manufacturer. They ordered a bunch of new parts. I'm sure that it will be fine – I know they really want it to be.

It's just one of those things that you can't fix it ahead of time. It happens after you get racing for 20 laps or so. When you practice, you don't get enough time to ever run 20 laps at once – so it's something where you don't have enough laps on the car to know you have a problem until you really get racing.”

On turning around his luck to start the year: “It's important to me, especially for that whole Avery group. They work really hard. It's a great group of guys, and hopefully we can have a good run for them fairly soon. I think the car's been pretty good each of the first two races, but we just don't have anything to show for it.”

On racing at Oxford Plains Speedway: “We race there twice out of the 14 races, so it's a seventh of your series. I'm looking forward to it. People who have been over there already (to test) said the track's in good shape. Hopefully, the last few years, it's been a good place for us.”

On whether it's a setup track or a driver's track: “It's probably been more chassis-wise and learning the line a little better for me. I think the track is actually quite a bit different every time we go there, at least that's what I've sort of found. This time of year it's usually a different setup than in July.

I've been lucky enough to hit on something on both ends – when the track is cool and green and also when it's hot and slippery in the summer. Hopefully we'll keep it going this weekend.”

UP NEXT

The ACT Late Model Tour heads Devil's Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt., on Sunday, May 22, for the Spring Green 111. This marks the first time the event will be contested at the half-mile speedway... Brent Dragon is the only three-time champion of the Spring Green.

Joey Doiron: PASS North Series

Star Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

Joey Doiron looks to rebound from a disappointing start to the 2011 season when the PASS North Series competes in the Star 150 at Star Speedway in Epping, N.H., on Saturday, May 14. The 2010 PASS Rookie of the Year won his one and only career start at the newly-resurrected Star Speedway, having taken the checkered flag in an open competition Late Model race at the track in 2008. This marks his first start in a Super Late Model on the flat quarter-mile track.

THE FACTS

WHO: Joey Doiron, Berwick, Maine

TEAM: No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet

CREW CHIEF: John Doiron, Berwick, Maine

BEST CAREER STAR SPEEDWAY FINISH: 1st (2008)

LAST RACE AT STAR SPEEDWAY: 1st (2008)

WHAT: PASS North Series Star 150

WHERE: Star Speedway, Epping, N.H. (.25-mile oval)

WHEN: 4 p.m., Saturday, May 14

PASS North Series

LAST RACE: April 30, PASS 150, Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Scarborough, Maine (21st)

NEXT RACE: May 21, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, N.Woodstock, N.H. (.25-mile oval)

CURRENT POINTS POSITION: 16th

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Joey Doiron collected his most recent victory in a full-bodied stock car at Star Speedway back in 2008.
  • In his spare time, Joey Doiron competes in go-kart races both indoors (during the winter) and outdoors.
  • Joey Doiron was one of just 13 cars to finish on the lead lap the last time the PASS North Series competed on a quarter-mile track, last September at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, N.H.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

JOEY DOIRON, Driver of the No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet, On rebounding from a disappointing day at Beech Ridge two weeks ago: “I'm pretty sure that setup-wise we were way better than we performed. It came down to getting a bad set of tires. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot with the tires all day – we just had to play the hand we were dealt in the race. I don't think we were as bad as what the finish was.

I just want a good finish (at Star Speedway) – I don't care if we have a terrible race and luck into a good finish. At this point, I'd almost rather have that than run up front all day and have bad luck at the end take us out like has happened the last couple of races for us.

I just want to get the kind of result our performance says we should have had.”

On racing at Star Speedway: “I like the track. It's a track where you can get up on the wheel. A driver can make up for it more so than at Beech Ridge or some place like that, where the car has you along for the ride if you don't hit the setup.”

On how Star compares to other quarter-mile tracks in the series: “I thought it drove like Canaan (Fair Speeday), but it's smaller and tighter than that.

It's flatter, and the corners are a lot tighter than White Mountain. It's way rougher, too. We just have to go there and try and keep the fenders on it, and we should be pretty good.”

Soirée écourtée à Black Rock…

Shortened night at Black Rock...

Saint-Pie, QC ...Alain Bergeron and his team were, this weekend, at Black Rock Speedway at Dundee NY to compete in an event where 34 drivers from ESS, Patriot Group and URC were there.

The night started not much very well for the Saint-Pie driver as he was not able to take the green of his heat race due of an minor engine problem. Fortunately, the team worked quickly and the problem was solved, allowing Bergeron to start in the B-Main race. However, only the first 4 at the checkered were granted a spot in the A-Main and Bergeron was starting from the 14th position. That never mind, Bergeron offered a solid performance to finish in third and qualify for the A-Main.

Alain Bergeron was then 27th on the starting grid of the A-Main and had already passed 4 cars on the first lap… but a contact with the outside wall in turn # 2 ended his night. Despite this incident, the driver of the 8B car kept his positive mind and the entire team was already at work to prepare the car for the next race.
