A dream of the otter and the mountain

Although we were some way offshore, an otter surfaced between Tony and myself, a still wriggling fish clamped firmly in its jaws. Unfortunately it was gone before I got my camera out.

As we approached Brodick Bay...

...we paddled alongside a beautiful mixed woodland.

I had borrowed Tony's new Werner Cyprus paddles. He was very pleased when I finally, and ever so reluctantly, gave them back. He

In Praise of the Pilot M90

Don’t expect any impartiality though, because it is about what is probably my favourite pen, the Pilot M90.

I bought this pen in the summer of 2009, from a Japanese seller on a well-known internet auction site. I am fascinated by Japanese stationery, paper, pens and pencils; it all seems to be exquisitely designed. In particular I am fascinated by the products of the Pilot Corporation, whose pens are innovative, beautifully designed and well made, even where they are mass-produced such as the V series rollerball pens. I don’t think I have used a Pilot pen which has been anything less than good, and the M90 is more than that: it’s excellent.

My route to this pen was circuitous. I started off with a green Pilot 78G which I bought from His Nibs .com.

I was impressed enough with that to move on to a black Capless (called the Vanishing Point in the US) which I bought from Cult Pens. I used the Capless as my main pen for over a year and filled it with all sorts of ink, from Pilot’s own black and blue ink in cartridges, to various Diamine and Noodler’s inks. Now it is filled with Noodler’s Bulletproof Black ink and I use it for making notes, particularly astronomical observations as I mentioned before here.

I first learned of the M90 whilst looking around the Fountain Pen Network. 2008 was the 90th anniversary of the founding of Pilot, and in keeping with previous significant anniversaries (not to mention custom and practice throughout the pen industry) they issued a limited-edition pen. What I found fascinating about this pen, was that it was not covered in gold or fancy decorations, but instead was a re-interpretation of a Pilot classic, the Myu 701, which is mentioned here.

The M90, like the Myu before it, is a pocket pen – a pen which by design has a shortened body and a long cap, and which only achieves operating length when the cap is posted. Before reading about the M90 I had never seen or heard of a pocket pen, but it seemed to me to be a unique solution to the problem of how to carry around a pen without a pen case, which most European pens appear to demand. By habit I carry pens around in my shirt pockets, but I have found that a standard European fountain pen – a Lamy Safari, for example - can sit proud in the pocket and be a bit cumbersome. The M90 sits discreetly in my shirt pocket, ready for deployment to take notes at any time.

When capped, this pen resembles a small, stainless steel pod. When posted, it transforms into a stainless steel quill. The sleek lines of the pen are spoiled somewhat by the ring which separates the nib unit from the barrel of the pen, but this has not irritated me, unlike some others who have lamented this where the original was more streamlined.

Some have complained that this pen is “only” a cartridge pen. The cartridges are Pilot’s own proprietary design; standard “international” cartridges will not fit. Pilot sells a press-bar converter separately, the CON-20, which fits snugly in the space available in the barrel. For over a year I used a Pilot cartridge, filled first with Pilot’s own ink and then refilled using a syringe and other manufacturers’ inks. Having used both the cartridge and the converter, I have to say that I prefer the converter partly because it is less of a hassle to do, and partly because I have less explaining to do if I use the syringe at work, where I do most of my writing. However the downside to using the converter is that the CON-20 does not tell you how much ink remains in the bladder, which in any case holds much less than the 1.1ml capacity of the cartridge. I have had the pen run dry unexpectedly on me on a couple of occasions, usually in meetings where I have forgotten to bring a back-up. I may well switch back to the cart, so I can see how much ink I have left.

On the subject of filling systems, I have to say that I cannot bring myself to be very excited by them. It would make no difference to me if the M90 was a piston-filler. To me the essence of a fountain pen is its nib; this is the point of contact with the paper, and the one part which is in use all of the time, unlike the filling system which is used only every few days or weeks. And the nib on the M90 is superb: one of the most striking things I found about the M90, and one of the reasons for buying one, was the integrated nib. Reading around the internet it seemed that this stainless steel nib was very stiff: definitely in the nail class of nibs. I was not bothered by this, and still I do not find it to be a problem, though I have yet to buy a pen with genuine flex, which I know have their fans.

I had been a bit wary of the stainless steel, however. I had childhood memories of my father’s stainless steel Parker pens. I’ve never liked the Parker “Flighter” pens much, probably because of the feel of them. They felt rough to me. But I need not have worried. The M90 is finished with great finesse, and brushed with more care and finer buffing than those old 1970s-era Parkers. The clip and the central ring are not brushed, and add a bit of contrast to the rest of the pen. With use, and constant uncapping and posting of the cap, the steel gathers fine scratches. The moral is clear: do not use this pen if you wish to have it looking perfect! But this pen was made to be used. I tolerated the microscratches at first, but now I celebrate them. This is MY pen and these are the scratches I have left on it. More disconcerting for me though was the dent I found on the barrel. How it got there, I still do not know. Even though I take care with my pens, and wrap them in a suede leather pen-wrap I made myself, this dent was still inflicted on my precious. To begin with, I wondered how to have it removed; I posted a question on FPN about it. One of the replies, which said that I should leave the dent and treat it as a battle-scar, made me feel better about the situation. The dent will stay, a reminder that once I was careless with this pen and to take better care in future (which I do).

My M90 has a M nib. M90s are available in either F (fine) or M (medium) nibs, though it should be remembered that these are Japanese standard thicknesses, which are finer than European widths. I have found though, that it leaves a line closer to a European M I think, and not as fine as I had been expecting. In a way I regret not buying one with an F nib, because as I use fountain pens, I find that now I favour finer lines to thicker ones.

The design has been tweaked a little bit to differentiate it from the Myu, most notably the small blue gemstone mounted in the top of the cap, the engraved M90 logo on the clip, and the design of the ring. In keeping with the blue gemstone, I decided I would only fill my M90 with blue ink, a resolution I have so far mostly kept, although I did once try it with purple ink. I reserve the right to change my mind; at the moment I’ve been using a lot of green ink. I have tried a variety of blue inks in this pen, which caused me a bit of a problem at first because one of the reasons I took up a fountain pen again was the fact that I could change colours easily. I tried to avoid blue ink, in fact. However blue seemed to be the only appropriate colour for this particular pen. The ink I use now is some old Quink Permanent Blue; before that, modern Quink Blue and before that, I used Waterman South Seas Blue. Quink gets short shrift from most fountain pen users but I think that is unfair; to be honest I was a bit sniffy about it myself, because I was more interested in using fine inks from the likes of Noodler’s and Diamine. But having tried some of those inks, I have returned to using Quink. It’s probably something to do with childhood memories of my father using it in his Parker fountain pens, and then using it myself at school. I have always liked that squat bottle. Quink behaves well in the M90, with a slight tendency to run on the dry side.

Even though the design is basically a 1970s design, the M90 looks thoroughly modern. This is a pen for people who enjoy modern design and fine writing. Every time I use this pen, even for the most mundane of purposes, my heart is lifted. I really wish that Pilot would produce a version of this pen not as a limited-edition but as a regular model.

NEW HAMPSHIRE MOTOR SPEEDWAY ANNOUNCES SECOND AMERICAN CANADIAN TOUR EVENT FOR 2011

For Immediate Release                                                ACT – 111010-59

Waterbury, VT – Building on the success of the past two ACT Invitationals, officials from New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) and the American Canadian Tour (ACT) announced today that the largest touring late model series will add a second event to the ‘Magic Mile’ in 2011.

The event will be presented as part of the IZOD Indy Car Series weekend on August 12-13, 2011 at the largest sports and entertainment facility in New England, the region’s only super speedway. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Division will join the ACT Late Models as part of an ‘ALL STAR’ weekend for short track racing, featuring full-fender ACT Late Models and the very popular open-wheeled NASCAR Modifieds.

“The past two years, the ACT Invitational has provided entertaining and exciting racing for our fans here,” said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of NHMS. This premier short track touring series helped grow our annual September NASCAR Saturday into a great tripleheader.

“When we added the IZOD Indy Car Series to our 2011 schedule, August 12-14, I wanted to make Saturday a ‘Short Track Showdown’ that showcases short track stars from around the northeast,” Gappens added. The format and number of teams we expect to be at NHMS for the August 12th-14th weekend is unprecedented. It should be very exciting for our fans and for the teams of the ACT.”

The ACT Late Models and NASCAR Modifieds feature events will be run on Saturday afternoon, August 13, which also includes Indy Car Series practice and record-breaking qualifying.

According to officials at the ACT headquarters, the event will be open to all ACT affiliate track Late Model teams that are a.) ACT legal, b.) in the top 15 in weekly points at an ACT affiliate track by entry deadline, c.) enter the event timely, and d.) get approval of their entry from their local track and from ACT. Additional teams from both touring series of the American Canadian Tour in the US and Quebec will be eligible to enter and go through the approval process. Each of the touring divisions will receive points toward the 2011 championships.

“Obviously, we are very excited about this announcement for ACT Late Model teams from throughout the region. This will certainly be different than this coming year’s ACT Invitational race on September 24th. After a couple years of watching how exciting and respectful the Late Model teams have been at New Hampshire, we wanted to give more Late Model teams an opportunity to race there. Being at Loudon over Indy weekend August 12-14, will be a dream come true for many of the Late Model teams. We expect to have as many as 100 teams trying to qualify for what will be a very unique short track kind of race on the ‘big track’,” said Tom Curley, the President of the American Canadian Tour.

More details regarding qualifying procedures and purses for the NHMS ACT Late Model ALL STAR event are expected in the coming months.

Tickets for the IZOD Indy Car 225 on August 14th start at $35 and advance tickets Saturday’s “Short Track All-Star Showdown” are only $25 for adults. Contact the NHMS Ticket office at 603-783-4931 or go to www.nhms.com for more information.

DELAWARE SPEEDWAY: Whelen Modified Tour heading to Delaware in 2011

Delaware Speedway's historic 60th season is set to be an exciting one as the speedway begins to rollout its plans to celebrate.  The speedway took to the A-Channel News at Six airwaves this evening with NASCAR representatives Bob Duvall and George Silbermann to unveil the first part of that celebration: this season the famous NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will make its first ever stop in at Canada's most historic asphalt racetrack.

More than a first for Delaware Speedway, the event also represents a first for the tour itself as it will be the first ever Canadian race for the tour.  The tour will be at the track September 3 and 4 as part of the Great Canadian Race Weekend.  The main event will run on September 4.

"The Whelen Modified Tour has been one of the top fan requests to have brought to the track for a number of years," said track General Manager Joe Czernai.  "We're proud to have come to the point where we can offer this event as part of our racing lineup, more of which will be announced in the coming weeks".

The Whelen Modified Tour is one of four NASCAR sanctioned regional touring series across the United States, along with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour and the East & West K&N Pro Series.  The tour is considered the next level above the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division, in which Delaware Speedway drivers compete on a weekly basis and is a developmental step for drivers aiming to compete in the top levels of NASCAR competition.

The Whelen Modifieds themselves trace their development to the early days of stockcar racing and are considered NASCAR's oldest racing division.  The vehicles are powered by 625 horse power V8 engines, the cars are capable of speeds of up to 150 mph (approximately 240 kph) when set loose on an open track.  Being their first stop at Delaware Speedway, discovering how they will perform on the half-mile is one of the thrills that await fans in September.

Delaware Speedway is also announcing plans to field a competitor in the event.  The track has moved to acquire a Whelen Modified vehicle and plans to put home track hero D.J. Kennington of St. Thomas behind the wheel for the historic race.  Kennington began his career racing in the Street Stock division at the track seventeen years ago and has since moved through the ranks of Late Model and touring series competition.  Kennington has competed in the NASCAR Nationwide series and has won the two most recent NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races held at the track.  He also recently earned the 2010 championship in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

Ticket availability for the event and season pass information for the full season will be announced in the near future. All information will be posted to the track website as soon as it is available, at www.delawarespeedway.com.

About Delaware Speedway: Delaware Speedway is a half-mile paved oval stock-car track, located just west of London, Ontario, Canada. Since 1952, Delaware Speedway has been the home to some of the finest stock car racing in Canada. Its unique natural amphitheatre-like setting allows a family or group of friends to enjoy exciting, comfortable and affordable evening or afternoon of racing.  Delaware Speedway is a proud member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series which promotes the best in local racing competition across North America.

NASCAR Canadian Tire PR : 2011 Schedule

Season Opens May 28 at Mosport Speedway; Covers 12 Tracks In Five Provinces

·         Circuit ICAR Date Added To Series Slate

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November 10, 2010) – NASCAR announced today the 2011 schedule for the fifth season of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, which takes the series to some of the top racing facilities throughout Canada.

The schedule features 12 dates at 12 different tracks across five provinces. The slate includes tracks and events familiar to the series, but the addition of another road-course event is new for next season.

The 2011 campaign gets underway on Saturday, May 28 at Mosport Speedway near Bowmanville, Ont. It is the first time the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series opens its season at the half-mile oval. Last season, Don Thomson Jr. earned the victory in an August race. This will be the earliest date the track has hosted Canada's premier racing series.

The season's second date takes the Canadian Tire Series to a new venue – Circuit ICAR located on the grounds of Montreal's Mirabel Airport. The 1.86-mile road course is located on the former passenger terminal's apron.

The series again will be included in many of Canada's largest motorsports events. For the fifth consecutive year, the Canadian Tire Series will share Montreal's legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on IÎe Notre Dame with the NASCAR Nationwide Series. This year's signature event on the schedule is slated for Saturday, Aug. 20. Additionally, a date at Toronto's Exhibition Place is set for Saturday, July 9. It is a pairing with the IZOD IndyCar Series at the popular Honda Indy Toronto. Two-time series champion Andrew Ranger picked up wins in both of these races last season.

The annual swing through Western Canada will include stops at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, B.C., and Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon, Sask. Both events resulted in standing-room-only crowds with Scott Steckly winning in British Columbia, and eventual series title winner DJ Kennington in Saskatchewan.

Another popular date is the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres in Quebec, which is on tap for Aug. 6-7. Last season, Ranger thrilled the fans of his home province with his third straight victory on the 1.53-mile temporary street course.

In what has become a tradition, the season will close and a new champion crowned at Kawartha Speedway, a .375-mile oval near Peterborough, Ont., on Saturday, Sept. 24. Last year, Pete Shepherd III picked up his first series-career win in the event, while Kennington celebrated his first series championship.

The 2011 calendar of races was revealed to many of the series' competitors and track operators at the NASCAR Canadian Recognition VIP Reception held Wednesday evening at The Fermenting Cellar inside The Distillery in downtown Toronto. This event recognized the accomplishments of participants in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, as well as competitors participating in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series in Canada.

Other 2011 highlights include:

*       The 2011 schedule includes races on seven ovals: Auto Clearing Motor Speedway, Barrie Speedway, Delaware Speedway, Kawartha Speedway, Mosport Speedway, Motoplex Speedway and Riverside International Speedway; and five road courses: Circuit de Trois-Rivieres, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Circuit ICAR, Mosport International Raceway and the temporary street course at Toronto's Exhibition Place.
*       June 11 will be the series' third consecutive year of competing at Delaware Speedway. Kennington has held serve at his home track by being victorious in each of the first two races there.

*       On June 25-26, the series will run at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont., at the facility's 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course. The race is part of an eventful weekend at the 750-acre facility. Last year, JR Fitzpatrick out dueled both Ranger and Jason Bowles for his second win at the track.
*       The Barrie (Ont.) Speedway date is set for Saturday, Sept. 10. Each of the past four trips to Barrie on this weekend has resulted in overflow crowds. The .333-mile tri-oval always produces one of the most exciting and action-filled events of the season. In 2010, Kennington edged Thomson by just .015 of a second.
*       The trip east to the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia for a Saturday, Sept. 17 event at Riverside International Speedway is a popular stop for the competitors. Tackling the high-banked turns of the .333-mile scale version of the legendary Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway is always a thrill for both competitors and fans. Kennington collected his fifth win of the season in this event.

Looking for The Perfect Shorthand Notebook

Years ago, in an earlier job in the civil service, I had a shorthand notebook which was just about perfect. It was made by HMSO (Her Majesty's Stationery Office - now called The Stationery Office after privatisation in 1996). In all senses this was a conventional shorthand notebook: it was wire-bound, and had feint lined paper. But the reason I liked it, was this: it had thick cardboard covers, with a hole cut into each, near the bottom. When the covers were turned inside out, and a 8cm treasury tag attached to brace them, it could be stood up to enable the typist to read what they had written whilst typing the text on a PC. I particularly liked this function, but also the light-blue cardboard front cover. The cardboard used was robust so it could be used anywhere dry and could withstand a battering in the briefcase.

Recently, I have been looking around for a similar shorthand notebook but to no avail. Most have the thick cardboard back cover, but the front cover is usually a thin sheet of glossy paper which simply is not robust enough to be used as a stand for anything at all. Even Clairefontaine's version is not up to spec (though the paper is as nice as ever).

If anyone could point me in the direction of a shorthand notebook which is similar to that old HMSO notebook, I'd be grateful for the information. I only wish now I'd ordered a few more and created a stash of them.

Rick Paya Motorsports Press Release - RPM To Field Second ACT Team For Austin Theriault

RPM To Field Second ACT Team For Austin Theriault

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- 11.9.10
RPM Press Release

GEORGIA, Vermont -- Multi-time ACT Late Model Tour championship team RPM Motorsports will expand to a two-car operation in 2011. RPM owner Rick Paya announced today that he intends to field a second entry for second-year driver Austin Theriault.

Theriault, of Fort Kent, Maine, will compete full-time on the ACT Tour in 2011 in the RPM Motorsports No. 57vt Ford Fusion.

"I'm really excited to be working with those guys," said the 16-year-old Theriault, who finished seventh in the series' overall standings as a rookie last season. "They've brought a lot to the ACT series and racing on a whole in this region, and they know a lot more than I do.

"Hopefully, I can draw on that information that they've collected over the years and it will make me a better driver."

RPM owns seven ACT championships, including the last two with driver and seven-time series champion Brian Hoar. Paya is looking forward to having Theriault in the fold.

"At this point, obviously, we want that eighth championship " Paya said. "I think it will be great to take a young driver like Austin and help him develop his career."

Theriault posted five top-10 finishes in 10 ACT starts last season, with a career-best finish of second at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in July, while driving for his family-owned team. He's hoping the move to RPM will produce that elusive first career victory.

Theriault's crew chief Mickey Green will also join RPM, as a co-crew chief with Paya. Several other crew members from Theriault's team are also joining the new No. 57vt in the transition.

"I'm sure the media and other people will have some expectations for me," Theriault said. "But, really, we're just looking forward to running well every week. The beginning of the year will be a learning curve for me, definitely. The cars will be a little different, but working with Rick and Brian, we'll just take things as they come."

This move marks the first time that RPM runs a two-car team for the entire season. The organization ran a second car for a few races in 2008 with a pair of veteran drivers occupying the seat.

Paya believes a second car will make RPM stronger after a year in which Hoar won three races and finished in the top-5 in 10 of his 13 starts.

"We have the infrastructure in place and we have the equipment to do this the right way," Paya said. "I think we're going to have a  good year, and we're going to have some fun doing it, too."

"I'm pretty pumped," Hoar said. "Austin's a very, very talented young guy, and he impressed the heck out of both Rick and I last year.

"I think he's got a lot of potential, and I think he's going to wake a lot of people up this year with what he does on the track."

ACT president Tom Curley voiced his support of RPM adding Theriault to the mix.

"(Theriault) has made a great decision joining with the RPM team," Curley said. "Rick is a proven winner as an owner, crew chief and manager. His positive and stable disposition will be a great fit for Austin, his family and those team members that will join them.

"And having a Brian Hoar as a mentor is about as good as it gets."

Theriault made his ACT debut in the 2009 season finale at Oxford Plains Speedway, where he was the second-highest finishing rookie in only his second career Late Model start. He finished seventh in his Thunder Road International Speedbowl debut last June, was invited to the second annual ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September and qualified for the prestigious Milk Bowl at Thunder Road in October. Theriault also competed in the ACT all-start event -- the Showdown At Chaudiere 200 -- in Quebec in August.

All involved feel the sky is the limit for Theriault.

"People will have expectations for him. We know that," Paya said. "But he finishes races, he keeps his composure and he knows how to handle himself with the media and the public. Those are some of the key things."

"We can't wait to get started."
